Dear

I had a quick look at this text band this seems the way to go

I’m currently at my office but tonight or tomorrow I’ll try something like :

If the call is for a single post then
get the author nickname
      If a author template exists for this author use the template
Else
Use the generic single template

Or to lower the resource consumption, as my particular authors are only in one category (“guest stars”)

If the call is for a single post then
Get the category name or ID

If the category name or ID is Guest Stars’s one then

get the author nickname
      If a author template exists for this author use the template
Else
Use the generic single template

By the way I thing we may postpone a little bit our wedding.
Been Europeans theses days might be a.. rockn’roll situation let’s say.
Our good ol’ Europe is collapsing, I'm not sure a European passport will be be a dream in a few months/years....

salut luc! si j'avais su que tu étais français, il me faudrait à reconsidérer ta proposition. j'ai toujours voulu une passport european! :)

if i understand correctly then you want to load a different single-author.php template for single posts by a specific author?

http://www.mihaivalentin.com/wordpress-tutorial-load-the-template-you-want-with-template_redirect/

specifically check out this section "Use a different layout for a certain post inside a certain category". you'd need to adjust for author but the concept should be the same.

it might be better to use locate_template over "include" but i'd have to test that out more to be sure

sidenote- what hook are you targeting for adding that image content to the different page templates? the above suggestion may not be neccessary... can you post the code you are using to try to add an image to the single post?

Hello

I'm looking for an elegant way to link single.php with a author specific template
The context :

My original website (carrington based) : http://velofun.fr
My playground to learn Thematic : http://www.saint-elie.com/testbed
WP 3.3b4 / Thematic latest svn

My website (about leisure / urban cycling) has two kind of authors :
-	a generic one :  me (myself and I)
-	Invited authors (grouped in the “guest stars” category)

What I want to do :

Having a specific presentation for some specific authors whatever the entry is : entry by author (ok) entry by category (ok) entry by post title (not ok)

Current situation
I have a specific presentation for categories, if i click on « Guest Stars » in my menu :
http://www.saint-elie.com/testbed/category/guest-stars/
The specific image /introduction text appear. (category-categorynickname.php ) ok so far
If I choose a specific « guest star », same success :
http://www.saint-elie.com/testbed/category/guest-stars/lovely-bike/

If i click on the author name ; everything is still fine (author-authornickname.php)
http://www.saint-elie.com/testbed/author/lovelybicycle/

But if instead, I click on the post title (single.php):
http://www.saint-elie.com/testbed/2011/04/lovelybike-effet-mary-poppins/

The specific environment disappears. And that’s normal as the template system cannot determine anything based on the url

what I’m failing to do

I’m looking for an elegant way to link a post to an author in a way that if the author has a specific template, the post (single.php) get the same presentation.

Carrington does that automagically, I’m not clear how to do this with Thematic.

Thanks in advance

Luc

several ways to skin the cat (where did that phrase come from anyway). to completely remove the post meta you could do:

add_filter('thematic_postheader','htv_postheader');

function htv_postheader() {
   $postheader = thematic_postheader_posttitle();
   return $postheader;
}  // end postheader

or

add_filter('thematic_postheader','htv_postheader_postmeta');

function htv_postheader_postmeta() {
   //sound of one hand clapping
}

or if you wanted to go the function route you could do:

function childtheme_override_postheader_postmeta(){
   //sound of one hand clapping
}

define('DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', true);

on wp-config.php as a security measure. Looks like that disable not only the editor, but the theme options too.

Commented it out, disabled the "Info on Author Page" option, all it's fine and dandy now.

Marking as solved.

Kathy will most likely come in and rain on my parade. I checked into the Author info, I could not find a hook for it, it looks like it is hard coded in the template, basically it is either "no author bio" or "author bio with everything".

The easy way to fix this is to copy your "author.php" from the Thematic folder and drop it into your child theme. Once in your child theme folder, just go in there and wipe out that whole author-email div.

<div id="author-email">
<a class="email" title="<?php echo antispambot($authordata->user_email); ?>" href="mailto:<?php echo antispambot($authordata->user_email); ?>"><?php _e('Email ', 'thematic') ?><span class="fn n"><span class="given-name"><?php echo $authordata->first_name; ?></span> <span class="family-name"><?php echo $authordata->last_name; ?></span></span></a>
<a class="url"  style="display:none;" href="<?php bloginfo( 'url' ) ?>/"><?php bloginfo('name') ?></a>
</div>

I usually try not to create more files, but I don't see any way to filter this info or override it. Not to mention this solution is ultra simple, fast and does the job.

After a couple months using Thematic I've just realised that in the authors archive (that's "/author/username/") the email address of the author is public. I've been looking for a way to disable this behaviour but apparently there's none. I've even found this snippet on wp-themes.com while looking for a solution:

"Thematic currently has three options that can be set from the Theme Options panel under Design: Index Insert Position, Info on Author Page and Text in Footer."

but alas, there's no Theme Options panel that I know of.

In the forum I've find several people with the same problem but no solution whatsoever.

Is there any reasoning for this behaviour/"feature"? Is there any way to disable it?

you're welcome. also, since you are 'returning' a value when using filters you don't want to simultaneously use 'echo'. echo spits it out as soon as it encounters what you are echoing... so it might be your avatar code is not being outputted in the right place.

function child_postheader($postheader){

Hey, thank you, Helga!
How did I know it would be you that would respond? :)
You are everywhere.

I am struggling to figure out the correct format to use when replacing 'avatar' with my avatar code:
<?php echo get_avatar( get_the_author_email(), '37' ); ?>

Any suggestions?

I'm a designer, trying to branch into Child Themes, so bear with me...

I'd like to add an Author Avatar to each post, and position it to the left of the Post Title. I've got the Avatar covered...I just don't know where to find the code to drop it into the Post in the right place.

How would one modify the layout of an individual post using a Child Theme?

Appreciate your time.

I'm having the same difficulty as Lumiere. I want the author link on the main blog page to link to the author archive for that specific author. I'm seeing other Thematic sites that don't have this issue, so someone must have figured this out or there is a function elsewhere in the thematic template or in the WordPress backend that I need to change.

Could someone who's theme author links are working correctly please post what they have in their child theme's function.php file regarding the above code?

Hi Carl,

The whitespace problem is probably caused by a typo in the translation file. There is a new Danish localization that was recently submitted. I can email it to you if you like.

I'm building a child theme using thematic and I'm really enthusiastic about thematic... Thanks!

My problem is occurs when the language is changed from English to danish. Now in the info under the post title I'm missing a space between "By" (in danish Af) and the authors name!! Have tried all the different things I could think of but haven't been able to figure out any solution. I would really appreciate your help!

Hello guys, this might be a dumb question, but I'm really having a hard time finding out the solution.

This is the piece of code I have on my theme (which is not Thematic), to call for the posts of a given author. But it only shows the author page, and links to the posts.

<p class="more">More from <?php the_author_posts_link('namefl'); ?>...</p>

I also have another blog, that uses Thematic, and when I click on the author link in the post, the link calls for an author archive page, that shows the excerpts of all the posts of that author. Is there a single php function to call for that archive?

This is the link to the excerpts in thematic - http://www.claudiomendonca.com/author/admin/

Hi,

When an Author/Admin comments on a post, Thematic puts the author username in the class of the comment.

For example, if the user is "admin" , a class is added to his comment as "comment-author-admin".

Many users change the name of the WordPress Admin user name from the default to something that is not easy for others to guess or crack. This adds a layer of security. Unfortunately, Thematic reveals this username in comments classes. So for example, if someone changed it to "secretadmin" the class will show as comment-author-secretadmin.

I didn't see this in the class TwentyTen theme, only with Thematic.

Please fix this security problem.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have added an author bio box to the bottom of the single post page (as here http://themeshaper.com/forums/topic/customizing-author-info).

At the end of the author bio box, I'd like to add a line of text which links to the author archive page, for example:

Read more by (author).

So, now, the function code looks like the one suggested in the above quoted thread by Chris:

function childtheme_postfooter($content) {
// we want the author's bio only on a single post
if (is_single()) {
$content .= "\n";
$content .= "\t";
// the whole class containing everything
$content .= '<div class="author_info">' . "\n";
$content .= "\t" . "\t";
// the class containing the gravatar
$content .= '<div class="author_gravatar">' . "\n";
add_filter('thematic_postfooter', 'childtheme_postfooter');

How can I add the link to the author archives?

Ah, the linking and styling was easier than expected; just use the $coauthors variable to fill in the link address and title blank spots, all wrapped in the appropriate span and link css class

function my_post_meta_authorlink() {

Sweet, I've got the core functionality figured out, at least. I need to add style and also would like to make coauthors names link to their additional posts, but this keeps me publishing for yet another day and I can figure the rest out with time.

NOTE this does NOT use the PLUGIN mentioned at start of this thread. This uses no plugin whatsoever, only added this inside my child theme's functions.php and use "Coauthors" as the name of the custom field in the posts.

// add additional authors to posts where "Coauthors" is the custom field
function my_post_meta_authorlink() {

	    global $authordata, $post;

   $coauthor = get_post_meta ($post->ID, 'Coauthors', true);
	    $authorlink = '<span class="meta-prep meta-prep-author">' . __('By ', 'thematic') . '</span>';
	    $authorlink .= '<span class="author vcard">'. '<a class="url fn n" href="';
	    $authorlink .= get_author_posts_url($authordata->ID, $authordata->user_nicename);
	    $authorlink .= '" title="' . __('View all posts by ', 'thematic') . get_the_author_meta( 'display_name' ) . '">';
	    $authorlink .= get_the_author_meta( 'display_name' );
	    $authorlink .= '</a>';
	if ($coauthor) {   $authorlink .= ', ' . $coauthor;  }
	    $authorlink .= '</span>';

    return $authorlink;

}

add_filter('thematic_post_meta_authorlink','my_post_meta_authorlink');

Also please note there is likely some more efficient way of doing this; I am just a learn-as-I-go PHP guy, and this is working for me right here and now. Improvement suggestions very welcome!

Cheers
