Go to your Thematic Theme folder.

Library > Extensions

Once in the Extensions folder, you will find them.

They are pretty clearly marked so header and doctype functions are located in header-extensions.php

I am a beginner in the wordpress field:)
I am really interested in designing a theme based on the popular Thematic theme...
but there is something that is really driving me crazy :D

I noticed the action hooks spread everywhere in the theme ... I understand that I replace them with custom functions I want

BUT WHERE ARE THE DEFAULT FUNCTIONS ORIGINALLY HOOKED TO THEM ????

They must be some where or else how is the theme displaying the content ??? ... For example, something like thematic_header() or thematic_doctype() ... It is impossible that there is no default code for that, right??

Hi

I am writing a tutorial as I am going through this and will share as I have come a little further.

How would I go about adding my own custom menu which I have already created in Dreamweaver?
It looks like this: http://myactingportfolio.com/images.html

The menu will show the active page, as seen in the above sample.

Another thing.
How would I remove the content title which is in the content area?
For instance a page called Intro, and right above the content is says Intro in a h1 or h2 tag.
All the pages have a title right above the content. It is the same as the name of the page. This seems like a basic matter that requires hopefully a simple answer.

Have a great week!

can't think of anything better at the moment- create a tile gif for the background and do the math. http://www.spry-soft.com/grids/ helps with the math.

i took a crack at putting some of the thematic layouts on the responsive 978 grid system. i'm not sure this is the BEST solution ever, but it was an interesting experiment. one day i'd like to try a layout on a fluid grid.

https://github.com/helgatheviking/Thematic-978gs

you can't import a layout w/ media queries and have it work though. plus you need some shenanigans to work IE (typical)

I'll certainly share the template when I create it. (Actually, there's a whole host of templates available on the 960.gs site - http://github.com/nathansmith/960-Grid-System/zipball/master)

I see mention of integrating the grid system more wholly into Thematic, but nothing in the current version so far.

I guess designers can use the tools available on 960.gs to achieve the look they want and play with the numbers in the css in library/layouts to achieve their own layouts. Would you agree this is the best method or could you suggest something better?

This is probably not the answer you are looking for, but is another option.

It sounds like you are just wanting a visual display of some boundaries. A lot of times I "light up" themes with a semi transparent background. Just insert it at the bottom of your CSS.

div { background: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.25) !important; }

Keep in mind, this works for any tag, not just div's. This is a super handy tip, especially for troubleshooting a bunch of different things. Old IE's don't show transparency so beware of 7 and 8.

No. You wanna place the code above in your child themes function.php. Rule of thumb is to never modify the files in the thematic themes directory as they will be overwritten when the theme gets updated. if you need more explanation on child themes look at some of the getting started customizing thematic posts on the main themeshaper.com site.

Hello, everyone. I was wondering if someone could help me with taking the content contained in the WordPress sidebar and putting it in the bottom of a page, the footer. I've always felt that having sidebars can distract users from the main content of a page and so I have been wanting to learn how to move that information elsewhere.

I've already found stickies on adding header images and editing the WordPress menus. Now I just need a solution to the problem above and I think I'll be ready to experiment with Thematic and WordPress in general.

Thanks to those who have taken time to read about my plight and especially to those who provide answers.

Hi,

I'm starting on a redesign and I've made a couple basic block diagrams. Since I've already done a few child themes using Thematic and it's familiar to me, I'd like to stick with it.

I have a few questions before I dive in further:

Are the designs I've laid out possible to create with Thematic (using a child theme)?

Is there anything structurally limiting about Thematic that would make these layouts inherently difficult?

Is there a better way to accomplish what I want? (even not using the Thematic framework)

Here are the diagrams:

http://www.vizualrecords.com/images/960_grid_12_col.jpg

http://www.vizualrecords.com/images/960_grid_12_col_v2.jpg

Granted these are throwing out much of the basic structure that's built in to Thematic but it seems like this is all doable. The little "w" on some blocks refer to widget areas. The colors don't have any particular meaning.

These are done over a 960px/12 column grid system. The diagrams were laid out in Illustrator (I find OmniGraffle frustrating to draw with :).

Thanks!

a list neatly organized? :) that is actually something that has come up a few times around here... getting a wiki going that is organized by what users aim to do. but it doesn't exist yet. there is more than 1 tutorial on thematic now. themeshaper.com itself has a ton of good content. as do a bunch of other places. though i understand that can be overwhelming when trying to start out.

this is a diagram that i find enormously helpful to figuring out where stuff is and what functions are going what.
http://bluemandala.com/thematic/thematic-structure.html

then the other thing i do is wade through the extensions folder in the thematic library. unzip thematic> library> extensions. that is the beating heart of thematic. never change anything there, but you can always look in there to see why things are behaving as they do and you can copy functions from there into your functions.php and mod them there.

take this example

function add_html_to_header() {
?>
<div>Bacon!</div>
<?
}

add_action('thematic_header','add_html_to_header',8);

it adds the function called 'add_html_to_header' to the thematic hook called 'thematic_header' in position #8... if you look at the diagram that means it is after the branding closes (after the logo and site descriptions). most of the time you don't use that number, but in the thematic_header there are other things already in a specific order... think of it as coats already on hooks, so you need to use an empty hook.

adding something to the sidebar is the same concept... you define your function then use add_action to tell it where to go... using one of the many hooks (most of which are in the diagram)

i wrote this on another thread but it is true here too... you've got to be willing to get your hands dirty in php. fortunately if you arent hard-headed (like i am) and aren't looking to do anything too crazy there are increasingly more and more 'snippets' out there that you can just paste into you functions.php w/o needing to 100% understand them.

here is a good tutorial on thematic and child themes:

http://www.catswhocode.com/blog/wordpress-how-to-easily-create-a-thematic-child-theme

you really ought to start by reading some of the tutorials... they already explain how to generally add/remove stuff. when you have a more specific question / run into troubles we can help you more.

in a round-a-bout way... thematic is a bunch of "hooks" and as wordpress runs through all the hooks it looks to see what is on each on and then executes that.

I am brand new to using thematic... I'm a designer who knows CSS/HTML but I get how to use the hooks and filters for thematic.

I need to add extra content to thematic, such as an ad area for my BuySellAds.com code. I'm totally confused about how to do this... I get that I need to use the function.php file (right?) but that's about it.

So, my question is, how in the world do you add extra content to thematic (in the header, in the sidebar, etc...) that can then be styled by the css file? Please break it down into super simple format... remember I'm just a designer! I know next to nothing about PHP, Javascript or any of that.

I think you need to be looking at your style.css in your child theme or maybe looking at what you left behind from the gallery theme stylesheet.

Hi,
I don't really know the proper word for it but I'm trying to rearrange where my wordpress posts go on the page.

right now they are placed in the sidebar, but I want them to be placed right below the "large image".
if you look at my site you can see that the images in my posts wont fit into the width of the sidebar.

ive been looking around at the code and i dont what to move where.
http://ottob.se/wp/?p=15

Love thematic/gallery and thanks for all the help.

I'd better watch this post! I want to know how something similar is done -- what I want to do is:

CATEGORY OR TAG NAME
- post
- post
CATEGORY OR TAG NAME
- post
CATEGORY OR TAG NAME
- post

and so on. Posts to include would have a particular tag or category, but the number per category/tag would be variable. I think what I'm looking at is two custom loops with the same basic structure and logic, but different conditions on each one...

These links seem useful for this:
