Thanks for the detective work. I changed the value to 1 as well and it pops right up after that.

Helga: that is more in line with what I am looking for. I'll give it a go for this redesign.

I'm a big fan of having multiple ways to access info and I'd rather users be able to just go to the page (or in my case release) that they want from the main page without having to go to an intermediary page first.

i'd have to agree w/ you that i am not a fan of 'clicking' to reveal the sub-menu- i think that most everyone expects hover. while i don't have the solution, it must be possible (maybe even using a different jquery plugin) to have the menu reveal on hover.

you'd also do well to have some sort of symbol/arrow to indicate that there is a submenu- that way people know to roll over

the mega menu by javakit that is used in the above example mentions activation on click versus hover, but i don't have it available to test and the docu isn't super clear.

a quick google search reveals other options, such as:
http://www.geektantra.com/2010/05/jquery-megamenu-2/ (demo hovers)

but i like the first example for 1. using 3.0 menus and 2. using thematic! :)

@Jonny Janeiro: Thanks! I have made the padding smaller but yes that's a temporary fix. Right now the menu has all the releases until the end of the year so I have a bit of time :)

@helga: That is looking promising. My only issue at the moment is with the second example posted in your link:

http://contemporacorner.com/

When you click on a menu item that doesn't have a sub menu, you go to that link. This is not really the best UI. If you could make it so that the submenu comes up on hover that would make sense. Thus, if no menu comes up on hover then there is no submenu. The way it is now is a bit confusing.

Anyway thanks for the tip - if the hover thing is possible I may use this for a redesign.

ah, i see. this is going to be a bigger list over time. so making text smaller will only postpone the problem.
perhaps it doesn't need the sub menu at all.

Hi,

I have a list of pages in a menu that goes down below the bottom of the screen but there is no way for someone to know this unless they scroll down. Is there a way to have a small arrow indicator at the bottom to show that there are more items below?

You can see this here:

http://www.vizualrecords.com/

go under Store > Music Downloads and you will see what I mean.

I know I could (and should) probably reorganize this but that would mean updating a lot of links.

Thanks!

OK problem solved: there was a conflict caused by the plug-in FV Community news. After removing the plug-in the jQuery started working again.

I realised belatedly that I hadn't noticed that none of the menu animations were working at all.

Hi I've tried this method and also @helgatheviking's slightly different version noted here:

http://themeshaper.com/forums/topic/thematic-menus-demystified-1

But neither method works for me.

If I check the source the thematic-dropdowns.js file (or my-dropdowns.js if following Chris's example above) is referenced correctly in the <head> and autoArrows is set to true as it should be.

I tried removing the additions to functions.php and simply editing the original thematic-dropdowns.js file (just to see if this would work) but the arrows didn't appear either with the child theme or with Thematic itself activated.

I'm running the latest svn version of Thematic using a child theme and Wordpress 3.0.1. I haven't done any additional styling for the theme as yet. Oh, and I have tried this with and without WP 3 custom menus.

neat idea. i am going to file that one away myself.

typically in thematic the first level drop-down would be .sf-menu li li or maybe sf-menu li li a if you've been styling the links instead of the list elements.

so maybe in your case

div#menu li.page-item-2 li a{
color:red;
}

this applies to links on list elements that are children of li.page-item-2

good luck w/ your deadline.

Hi Chris,

Yeah sometimes the widgets get all wonky on me and the text disappears or it pushes the text from one widget to another one without me doing anything. Doesn't happen often but once in a while and it is totally unpredictable. Don't really know why it does this.

So, I was copying over a backup from earlier today to fix it and my FTP program froze. It's copying over again now and everything should be working soon.

The only thing I installed was MailChimp which I have since deleted but that didn't help.

I'm backing up what I have now, then going back to the wordpress folder I had before I made any changes or updates 6 days ago and will make the appropriate changes from there unless there is something else that may be causing this.

My dropdown menus used to extend wider than the text of the menu items, but now they are all scrunched an the text often is on two lines.

It's not something in the CSS as I uploaded an older saved CSS file and the problem persists.

Hi

I'm new to Thematic (it's really something else - really impressive) and PHP, and have quite a specific question:

I'm trying to have a drop down menu that shows it's entries in reverse order of posting. i.e. the reverse of 'post_date' parameter in the 'wp page menu' Tag.

Also, that it only effects one drop down, not all the drop downs. For example, when I made the list alphabetic (through the 'post_title' parameter) all the drop downs became alphabetic. How do I make it so for just one of them?

Is it possible with this Tag, or should I be considering a different approach?

Many thanks

also, i'd prefer to have a CSS class that i can customize in other ways - adding a background image that is right aligned would be ideal.

Thematic does not provide a built-in drop down nav for the sidebar. Take a look into the WordPress Plugins Directory. There are several nav widgets creating for example a page navigation.

Hello, thanks for Thematic!

I'd like to know if Thematic supports drop downs in the sidebars. (If this is mentioned in documentation somewhere, please point it out) I'm guessing that with top nav drop downs by default the sidebar capability must be in here somewhere.

More detail:
I'm creating a storefront using wp-ecommerce, so I'm using this dropdown on the store's product categories widget. If above-mentioned drop down feature exists, would anything special need to be done to adapt it to a non-thematic widget? Adapt the classes I'm assuming.

I knew I have seen something like that somewhere. Here it is. A JQuery plugin that do just what I want to do: identify the end of the screen and change the direction of the submenu, so it never goes out of screen...

http://p.sohei.org/stuff/jquery/menu/demo/demo.html

Know the challenge is to implement it as a Thematic Menu. At first I will need to understand how all this theme thing works. LOL

Let's see what I can do.

Here's the problem.
style.css (line 1)

#menu {
overflow:hidden;
}
Delete the overflow:hidden;

thank you Chris,
I've added st-menu definition and it does seem a lot more robust.
However, the subpages don't show in firefox (they do in IE).

I can't see what I did wrong...
