sorry, don't follow you. can't you just put 1 large background on the body? or #wrapper? perhaps you could create a diagram or screenshot to better explain.

I'm building on Thematic, and I'd like to use a background image for my entire site; header, body, and footer. I'd like to utilize all of the screen real estate, and not just the real estate specified in the thematic dimensions.

Can anyone tell me:

a: what dimensions should I use in the creation of the image?
b: how do I go about implementing use of the image?

Also, I'd settle for being able to use 3 separate images for header, body, and footer as long as they used up all the screen real estate and not just that weird center area that gets inhabited when I use a banner in place of the blog title.

I hope I'm explaining this correctly. Thank you for reading.

huh? the footer only needs to be made sticky for really short posts. if you are having problems w/ long posts then you've borked your HTML markup (not closing something) or you've messed up the default CSS somehow. without a link no one can help you more.

Hi,

I'm trying to finish a Thematic child theme and have a problem I haven't been able to figure out. On the blog page of the site, the footer is stuck in the #main div, but only on the blog page. I'm using the Blog template for that page. I've tried adding extra closing div tags, but it doesn't seem to change anything. In fact, I've added all kinds of text to the template-page-blog, in all kinds of different places, and have commented out the entire loop, but nothing on the page changes. It's really strange.

The page in references is: www.dlconsulting.com/blog

thanks for taking a look.

I ended up using this solution:

combined with this sticky footer css:

http://www.cssstickyfooter.com/using-sticky-footer-code.html

Thanks for the reply, Helga... Yes I do want the footer to always be visible and always stuck to the bottom of the browser (even when dynamically resizing the browser)... And also allow for scrollable content above, if necessary. There are various jquery plugins that seem to do it that I think I'll have to look into.

"If you resize the browser (safari/FF) the footer stays pinned to the bottom but you must now scroll to find it. Refreshing the browser, no matter what size it is, will place the footer at the bottom."

the point of the sticky footer is that it is always at the bottom of the content and not floating in the middle of a short page. on a page with long enough content the content pushes the footer below the viewport anyway and it doesn't matter. the point isn't to always be fixed to the bottom of the viewport, which sounds like what you are after. in that case you do need position: absolute.

I'm still trying to find an elegant way to do this! Both Chris' and Helga's solutions work... BUT only when you first load the page.

If you resize the browser (safari/FF) the footer stays pinned to the bottom but you must now scroll to find it. Refreshing the browser, no matter what size it is, will place the footer at the bottom.

Any other ideas... So far, the only one that worked for me was just position:absolute but that broke in IE7 and it's not great because of the potential overlapping of elements.

simona,

your code looks good, but make sure that the path to the file name is correct.

if you've added this code to your theme's style.css and your images are in a folder called 'images' (in the root of your theme) then your path should actually be:

background: url("images/pencil1.png") no-repeat scroll 0 2px #FFFFFF;

the ../ means go UP one level from where you are (style.css) so no doubt it isn't finding the image folder. you can see that in firebug too usually as you'll get 404/not found errors.

Hi Helga

Many thanks for your answer. In fact I had taken a look at the example site's CSS through Firebug, and what I found is the following:

To add an image besides the tag links, I guess this is the code. I added it in my style.css and that created some space right before the tag-links in the postfooter where the small image should come, but the image itself doesn't appear...what am I missing? I double checked the image name to make sure it's right.

#content .entry-utility .tag-links {
background: url("../images/pencil6.png") no-repeat scroll 4px 1px #FFFFFF;
padding: 0 8px 0 32px;
}

---------
To add the image before the comment count, I copy/pasted this code in the style.css but there is no effect at the frontend...not even some space as in the first case.

#content .entry-utility .comment-link {
background: url("../images/pencil1.png") no-repeat scroll 0 2px #FFFFFF;
padding: 0 11px 0 18px;
}

What do you think?

Also, I'd like to add a graphic next to the other two elements displayed in the postfooter (post category and tags), something like it's being displayed on this blog: http://www.blago.net/baking/.

Hi there,

I'm running WP 3.2.1 and a childtheme based on Thematic latest version with Danish language files on both.

For some reason the subsidiary widgets are not showing up AT ALL...

First I thought it was one of the template files, but then no.

I can see in the sidebare-extension.php that it is testing for 'true' if the sidebar is active, I don't know if that has anything to do with it, because the primary sidebar is showing up okay.

I tested it with just very basic stuff in the function file and still the same, also I created a new blog from scratch on my server, but with no translation and it's working fine there, as it did on my desktop where I was developing in English.

I also tried turning off most of the plugins that could cause some interference, still the same.

I was hoping someone could help me out - please, I'm just about to let this site go live.

How do I move comments to the thematic_abovefooter() area. I'm using Disqus and I'm trying to make the comment area full width. Here's a post with comments.

thanks sergio for helping me test this! anyone else want to lend a hand. here's my latest version. seems to work for me, and almost works for sergio (though not in child themes apparently)

// KIA Sticky Footer
function kia_sticky() { ?>
<script type="text/javascript">

    jQuery.noConflict();

    jQuery(document).ready(function($){

		$.getDocHeight = function(){
			return Math.max(
				$(document).height(),
				$(window).height(),
				/* For opera: */
				document.documentElement.clientHeight
			);
		};

		matchHeight();

		function matchHeight() {

			//available height of window - #header and #footer
			var mainHeight = $.getDocHeight() - $("#header").outerHeight() - $("#leader").outerHeight() - $("#footer").outerHeight() - parseInt($("#footer").css("margin-top")) - 1 - parseInt($("#main").css("padding-top"))- parseInt($("#main").css("padding-bottom")) - $("#wpadminbar").outerHeight() ;

			$('#main').css('min-height', mainHeight );

		}

		$(window).resize(matchHeight);
});

</script>

<?php
}
add_action('wp_head', 'kia_sticky');
// End KIA Sticky Footer

suggestions?

This works for me:

I removed all the reference to #leader which I believe was a bug:

#header").outerHeight()*removed this* - jQuery("#leader").outerHeight() *removed this*- jQuery("#footer")

changed the $ to jQuery

// KIA Sticky Footer
