Thank you for the suggestions, After some reflection I think that jQuery is going to be the best bet - it's just a minor stylistic addition, so it doesn't warrant a full new sidebar - I'd rather keep the original thematic framework there.

Hello Minimalist,

I suspect that dynamiharry may have put the code in the child theme's "functions.php" file. I hope you're using a child theme for your website (more info on it here http://themeshaper.com/thematic/guide/?page_id=66) if not why you should (if you are already using a child theme, just skip that link) :)

If you don't yet have a child them "functions.php" file you can create a new one, just name it functions.php (or see the Thematic sample child theme that comes with pre made one in the download of thematic). An Open PHP tag will look like this:

<?php

add the following code after it and it should work fine:

//Function that creates the opening DIV tag above the Main Asides

function webmagic_divabove_sideopen() {
	echo ('<div id="yournewdivname">')
	;
}
add_action ('thematic_abovemainasides' , 'webmagic_divabove_sideopen');

//Function that creates the closing DIV tag below the Main Asides

function webmagic_divbelow_sideclose() {
	echo ('</div><!-- This is the end of Your New Div -->')
	;
}
add_action ('thematic_belowmainasides' , 'webmagic_divbelow_sideclose');

There are plenty of people more experienced than me on here who are brilliant and may have other suggestions but I tested the code above and it worked fine! Note, what the above is doing in simple terms is Thematic has been cleverly designed like a wall with velcro hooks on it in key places in the website. The code says take what I put in my echo statement and attach it to one of Thematic's velcro hooks, in this case we are targeting the hooks that are helpfully called thematic_abovemainasides or thematic_belowmainasides.

Others on here may have other thoughts or advice but that's my take on it!

Hi, I am trying to make a drastically customized homepage layout and in doing so have created a few new homepage asides - my issue is that I want to add some imagery to the sidebar (an image of a circle that gets absolutely positioned top left) and need to put that image in the sidebar unit. Normally I'd use a sidebar template but I'm convinced that there is a better method, maybe a function that I'm unaware of, to accomplish this feat. Any ideas?

Hello all,

I'm new to the forums, and pretty new to web design—I'm running into a few issues with some custom widgets:

I'm building a "Student_Links_Widget" and I only want it to be displayed in the sidebar of a template page called "students".

My widget function is as follows:

function widget($args, $instance) {

  extract($args, EXTR_SKIP);

  //if (is_single()) {

  echo $before_widget;

     if ( !empty( $title ) ) {
echo $before_title . $title . $after_title;
};

       echo "HELLO";

  //}
}

is_single works, and displays the content in the sidebar of a single post page, but is_page('students') does not work.

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance,
Julian

on a US keyboard the backtick mark ( ` ) shares a key with the tilde ~ ... upper left next to the 1. i'm not sure where it lies on other keyboards.

text widgets aren't in the template. they're in the widgets section of the dashboard.

Thanks for your reply!

In fact I did'nt change that much in the php or html but stuff in css....

I couldn't find the textwidgets any where in the template. A mistery...
I solved this sidebar issue by replacing it to the 2 second and third additional sidebar.
and I called the sidebar so early to place it above the container/ content en not below.

I appreciate your reply! Backtick marks are? ... < ? >? Like that?

first off, it looks like you have some improperly closed html markup. you can tell this b/c when i view the source w/ firebug or chrome's dev tools you can see the markup doesn't match what thematic's ought to look like

#main
  #container
    #content
  #primary
  #secondary

my guess is the problem lies in one of your text widgets, i've seen that happen plenty of times before.

additionally, i'm not sure why you are calling that sidebar so soon in your template. if you want it to replace the normal sidebar, why not put it in place of thematic_sidebar() which occurs nearer to the end of the default template.

please post your code between backtick marks

Hi there,

I made a child theme upon thematic theme for a client with some extra sidebars. I have put some code in functions.php and it works just fine. But now I have problems with the blogpage. It shows the sidebar that is not supposed to show up and worse, it's shown underneath the posts! :-(

I have tried some things like deleting the sidebar, showing the full template but the effect is the same all the time. When I click on preview, It works, but I can't save the template page for the blog.
What to do?

The url is: www.image2media.nl

Kind regards Irene

A link to the site would be more useful to help as I can then see what css and html is in actual play.

are you having the same problem as the OP w/ widgets not updating?

first, make sure that you are using the latest stable version of thematic:
http://developing.thematic4you.com/thematic-development-release/

second, make sure you disable any form of caching (either plugins or something like cloudflare)

I've tried this but no luck. I also tried creating a post (this worked before).

This problem is replete if you search for it.

I've yet to find an answer.

I can't begin to describe the delay this has already caused me.

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to redo my website using Thematic, and add some adjustments to it as well, however sizing is creating a weird issue for me.

I want the website to be a total of 1000 px wide, with the content being 642 px (incl. border), an 18px margin to the right, and the sidebar widgets taking up the rest of the space, which should be 360px. However no matter how much I check and recheck the code, it wont size properly.

Here's a photo to show what I mean:

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/2140/picture1qz.png

In the above picture, my header is 1000 px, the content is 642px, the gap between the content and sidebar is ~30 px, and the sidebar is only ~300 px.

Along with the relevant code:

#main{
width: 1000px;
margin: auto;
margin-top: 20px;
margin-bottom: 20px;
padding: 0px;
}

#container{
width: 600px;
margin: 0px 18px 0px 0px;
padding: 20px;
background-color: #363636;
border: 1px solid #4a4a4a;
}

#content{

Oh my that was easier to solve than I thought.

In my case using #secondary instead of #primary created equal height columns and allows a background image behind #page to extend all the way to the footer:

function my_scripts() { ?>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    jQuery.noConflict();
    function equalHeight(group) {
        tallest = 0;
        group.each(function() {
            thisHeight = jQuery(this).height();
            if(thisHeight > tallest) {
                tallest = thisHeight;
            }
        });
        group.height(tallest);
    }
    jQuery(document).ready(function() {
	equalHeight(jQuery("#content,#secondary"));
    });
    </script>

<?php }
add_action('wp_head','my_scripts');

This solves the problem of the background image looking cut off on pages where the sidebar is longer than the content area.

Thank you Chris the Moderator and lindathep for posting this function.

(it's awesome)

uhh no- you weren't unclear. the thing listing all your pages is a widget. you can remove that widget in your dashboard and insert the function found in the codex in the manner i have illustrated.... to any of the available sidebar hooks.

or there might be a widget that does that already. lo and behold:

Hi, Maybe I was a bit unclear... The sidebare lists all pages in my site dynamically in a tree-like structure. It lists all pages on the same level as the one I am looking at as well as all of their children.

Ho do I make it ONLY display the sub-pages of my current page?

Thanks...
